Moyvane 1-08

Na Gaeil took on Moyvane, away from home, in the first round of the Novice Championship last Sunday. Moyvane won the toss and opted to play with the strong breeze in the first half. Straight from the throw in David Culloty, who had an excellent game, gathered possession and moved the ball forward resulting in Dermot Flaherty, our top scorer on the day, opening Na Gaeil’s account with just over a minute gone. Moyvane responded almost immediately when their corner forward converted a free to level the scores. Na Gaeil dominated the opening fifteen minutes, with Mike Griffin scoring two fine points from play, followed by a goal by Dermot Flaherty, who gave the Moyvane keeper little chance, after being set up by Diarmaid Herlihy. Na Gaeil took their foot off the pedal, which Moyvane took full advantage of scoring 1-04 in a ten-minute spell putting the home side up by two. Dermot Flaherty reduced this to one point just before the referee signalled for half time, leaving the score Na Gaeil 1-04 Moyvane 1-05. The opening minutes of the second half was a very close affair with both sides trading scores, with both sets of defenders giving very little away. Na Gaeil’s scores came courtesy of Mike Griffin, Eamonn O'Neill and a superb effort from Dan O' Connor, who had a fine game at centre field, from distance. Dermot Flaherty got the equalising score for Na Gaeil by a well-converted free kick. Moyvane pressed on to restored their lead but failed due to resilience of the Na Gaeil defence, led by example by full back Richard Barrett, who cleanly dispossessed the Moyvane attack and on the resulting attack Na Gaeil were awarded thirty-five yard free which was duly converted by Eamonn O'Neill. With the clock running down the mid field paring of the Dan O'Connor and David Culloty were superb in keeping Moyvane hemmed into their own half. The insurance point came in injury time courtesy of minor Ian McCarthy, who showed great awareness and positional sense when he was brought on, leaving the final score Na Gaeil 1-10, Moyvane 1-08.
