In poor weather conditions Na Gaeil took on Renard in the Novice championship replay down in south Kerry last Saturday evening. Having won the toss Na Gaeil opted to play with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half and got on the score board after eight minutes when Paul Daly converted a free after Seamie O’Neill was fouled just outside the large square. The first half was a low scoring affair as both sides tried to adapt to the poor weather conditions, with the sides tied at three points apiece at half time with Na Gaeil's other scores coming from Dermot Flaherty after a superb solo effort and Paul Daly who pointed after being fed a long ball by Dan O'Connor. Renard were quick to get off the mark in the second period with Na Gaeil's reply coming courtesy of Paul Daly after five minutes having been set up by Dermot Flaherty. From the resulting kick out Donal Rooney rose highest in the centre of the field and played the ball into Diarmaid Herlihy who knocked it over the bar. Na Gaeil were reduced to fourteen men mid way through the second but managed to stay in touch with points coming from Dan O'Connor and Seamie O'Neill. Being a point down and time running out corner back Eoin Doody converted a free from twenty yards out. Dan O'Connor sent Na Gaeil into the lead after Declan Doody supplied an excellent pass having secured possession in midfield. Deep in injury time Renard equalised to send the game, once again, into extra time leaving it at full time 11 points apiece. In the first half of extra Na Gaeil were first to register a score through a free from Eamonn O'Neill. This was followed quickly by a fine score by Seamie O'Neill. Renard again drew level before Eamonn O’Neill through a pointed free sent Na Gaeil into the halftime break of extra time leading by a point, 0 - 14 points to 0 - 13. That’s the way the game was to finish with both sides coming close on a couple occasions but failing to score.
