In this, the first game of the Brendan's League, a rusty Na Gaeil side took on Ardfert in near ideal weather conditions away from home, with just a slight breeze favouring the home side. Na Gaeil were first to get on the scoreboard with Declan Doody winning the ball in midfield and having worked it up field, was in the right place to send it over the bar. Ardfert quickly got settled, tagging on four early points without reply. Half way through the first half a quick sideline ball from Eoin Doody saw Mike Griffin make a telling run and with a quick one two with Dermot Flaherty saw him rattle the Ardfert net, adding to the earlier free that he had converted. Na Gaeil had a few opportunities soon after but failed to capitalised on these chances. Ardfert dominated the rest of the half and had it not been for some fine saves from Tim Cotter and good covering by the back line, things could have be a lot worse for Na Gaeil at the halftime break, leaving Ardfert 1-07 to Na Gaeil 1-02. Ardfert began the second half where they had left off the first with a quick point from the throw in. From the resulting kick out possession was quickly secured and out of the resulting attack a 45 was awarded. This time Mike Griffin became supplier with the 45 being floated into the box where Dermot Flaherty rose highest to fist the ball into the back of the net. This was to spur Na Gaeil on and they began to put their stamp on the game, clawing their way back into the game with points from Dermot Flaherty three(frees) Sean Herlihy four to Ardfert's two points. With the game entering injury time, and Na Gaeil up by two, a direct ball into the Ardfert full forward line led to Tim Cotter pulling off another fine save but the follow up saw Ardfert scoring the winning goal. Na Gaeil will rue the easily kicked points that were squandered plus a lot of loose play that resulted in a high turnover of possession, a good opening game though, that will stand to this side in future games. Final score Ardfert 2-10; Na Gaeil 2-09.
